Cicely Balston

Cicely is Mastering Engineer based in London. She started her career learning the basics in a number of disciplines, including assisting music editor Simon Changer in his recording/mix studio, sample editing at Spitfire Audio and freelancing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She decided to pursue mastering at Gearbox Records.

Over the eighteen months at Gearbox, Cicely learnt to cut on their Haeco/Scully lathe and expanded her knowledge of analogue mastering on their range of new and vintage equipment. While at Gearbox she worked on records for Brownswood Recordings, Decca, Sony and all the releases for the Gearbox label. Alongside this she cleaned, maintained and listened to their library of original blue note LPs and managed a Heritage Lottery funded archiving project on behalf of Sony.

In February 2016 Cicely started working at Air Studios Lyndhurst.  She initially assisted Ray Staff but quickly moved on to mastering her own projects. Highlights include:  remastering David Bowie’s catalogue (including the ‘Who Can I Be Now?’ boxset, and the ‘Bowie Live At Glastonbury 2000’ DVD); mastering award-winning soundtrack albums for the composers Pat Jonsson and Laurence Love-Greed; and mastering both sell out records by saxophonist Nubya Garcia. Her full list of credits as well as a few clips of audio can be found on the work page.
